dead spot in motor for lionel 97 coal elevator
Posted by amtrack5899 on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 7:46 PM

I have a lionel  97 coal elevator.  The motor for the conveyor has a dead spot on the armature.  I removed and cleaned the brushes with rubbing alcohol. I cleaned the face of the armature that the brushes make contact with using rubbing alcohol and a fine wire brush on a dremel tool.  This hasen't removed the dead spot.  The motor starts and runs fine until it stops on this dead spot. Is there anything else that I can do to remove this dead spot or should I bye a new motor for it?

Hello,  I had a dead spot on my armature for one of my turbines and to fix the problem i had to buy another armature that had good windings and it has to be orginal...for the 97 coal elevator..i have one of these too...they are nice...but very hard to get to the motor parts...i do not even wanna attempt to take apart my motor....i would first look for an armature online or at swap meets or train shows and the take it to a shop and they can put it in...there is a special way to find the dead spot on an armature...my shop told me how but the have a bench tester and they do it the easy way with 2 wires...one on one of the 3 plates of the armature and the other some place else...thats all i know...thanks
