I have an opportunity to buy this engine brand new for just over $200.

Anyone have any experience with it? Good buy?

Retails for $350.

It would give me an excuse to run one of my loops with command :)

I just ordered one for $219.95, but it sounds too good to be true. On the other hand, how can we go wrong at that price? That little 0-27 Pacific has a more advanced TMCC than my GP-9, plus a back up light on the rear of the tender. Puffing smoke and Electro-Coupler to boot. It looks like grey paint on the nose rather than sliver, but of course, it's a Lionel Lines paint job.

Where did you purchase it? $220.00 seems like a good deal, but can't fin it listed anywhere for that price.

Hi mpzpw3,

Sorry about the late reply. The Lionel 4-6-2 Pacific advertisement is in the February Issue of Classic Toy Trains, and is advertised by Trains on Tracks for $249.95 When I called them the price was lowered to $219.95 plus $16.84 freight.

It’s a fantastic buy! The only thing that I can find wrong with the engine is that the rear electro coupler wont open sometimes. It works while the train is in motion to drop cars, but when the engine is just sitting there the coupler usually wont open. That coupler is a lot cheaper looking than the all metal electro coupler on my Lionel GP-9. Guess I got used to the GP-9. Also, the TMCC behaves a little different.

The Pacific engine is a heavy bugger, and the tender is real heavy too. My 13 year old is just strong enough to handle it. Small children could be injured playing with that thing.

Otherwise, the engine operates perfectly in conventional mode and TMCC mode. It has a powerful motor, and my new Lionel CW-80 Transformer will just handle it. Before I oiled the engine it would hang-up a little when starting in reverse. That would cause the CW-80 warning light to start blinking.

The smoke unit only releases a small amount of smoke until the Cab-1 Smoke Boost button is pushed. Then we get plenty of smoke. Our little Lionel 0-4-0 puffs out just as much smoke, and we don’t have to hold any Buttons. Anyway, I guess it’s a good feature, and will make the air a little easier to breath,

If you have any questions about 6-38062 I’ll be glad to help. It’s a good deal, especially for 0-27 layouts, and limited budgets.

I just purchased one of these "Baby" Pacifics new in box for just over $200.00. What a deal with TMCC and a diecast engine and tender. It runs great and it a fantastic companion to my Postwar Celebration series reissue Lionel Lines freight (I have it easily pulling eight of these cars). The size is just about right and is comparable to a postwar mid-range steamer. I wish Lionel would put out more Lionel Lines lettered steam engines.
