Novice transformer help
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 23, 2003 10:50 AM
I just pulled out my Lionel out of the attic for Christmas. It is from around 1980 and it just has the red trainmaster transformer. I ordered new track and have just a single layout around the tree and living room, but it is about 30 straights and 20 curves. It is 027 also. Will a larger or better transformer help keep the speed the same around the turns? If I give it enough juice to go around the S turns at a decent speed, it derails at the end of the straightaway. I have to keep it real slow to where it bearly makes it around the curves to stay on. Any input will be greatly appreciated. Any ideas on what transformer and anyone with one to sell.
Thanks
Neil

My thinking is that if the transformer has enough power to speed the engine to derailing speed it should have enough for the full loop. The problem might be if you only have the power wires connected at one location. If so, you can get additional lockons, or solder direct to the rails, and add power feeds at the areas where the train slows down the most. Remember to keep the wiring staight, common (U) to the outside rail and the power feed to the middle rail. There is a "rule-of-thumb" about putting a power feed every so many rail joints, I think it's 6.

You might also try cleaning the track using denatured alcohol, or Goo-Gone, on a rag. Both are available at home centers (Lowe's, Home Depot). Also check that the joint pins are tight.

Additional lockons are readily available from any train/hobby shop selling 3 rail track.

I hope one of these suggestions solves your problem. Have a Merry Christmas.

Roger, I definately appreciate the help and I will try them both. I think the additional lock on's will probably do the trick. Much appreciated.
Thanks Again
