752 winch repair

       Thanks for the tip.  BTW, great job on that 752A!  I was inspired when I read about the restoration, and I decided to restore a Lionel 342 culvert loader (yes, I am a Lionel and Gilbert Flyer fan)!

In restoring the 752A Seaboard Coaler I ran into an issue and found a fix you all may be interested in.

The winch on the coaler has a friction clutch between the drive gear and the spool.  Over years the surfaces become very slick and the slippage prevents the winch from lifting the clamshell into the tower.  To increase friction I placed a rubber washer between the spool and the drive gear.  The rubber increases the friction but still has enough slip to prevent line or motor damage.  All that is needed is a 3/16 x 1 ¼ x 1/16 rubber washer.

1. Remove building by twisting tabs carefully
2. Run clamshell out to empty winch of line
3. Remove side plate from motor housing gearbox holding spool and drive gear by removing the screw from the side plate
4. Remove winch spool cover
5. Loosen set screw on spool retainer and slide spool off spool drive gear assembly shaft
6. Clean any oil or grease from the surfaces and clean the powder from the rubber washer
7. Place rubber washer onto shaft and place spool on rubber washer
8. Mark rubber washer where excess extends from around spool.
9. Remove rubber washer and trim excess rubber washer.
10. Reassemble spool, retainer and rubber washer on drive gear assembly
11. Squeezing by hand the spool and drive gear together secure set screw on retainer
12. Replace the spool drive assembly into motor housing gear box
13. Replace winch spool cover
14. Replace side plate and tighten screw.  Side plate will be spaced out slightly but will not effect operation
15. Operate winch to wind cord on spool and test operation.
