Lionel's Trainsounds is a dumbed down (cheaper and less impressive) version of Lionel's [RailSounds I and  II ).

Lionel's cheaper Trainsounds suffers from an extremely inadequate amplifier chip, which makes it inaudible, even with the volume knob turned to maximum.

Compare it to a Lionel RailSounds tender or boxcar, and you'll experience the difference.

Lionel's Trainsounds is ok, it just needs to be louder.

Hi,

Thanks for all the info. I went to the sites that CSXT30 posted and got all the dogs barking at the noise. Will probably try to put the sound card in a seperate car so I can use it with more than one loco. I started to buy some old Lionel stuff on ebay a couple of years ago. Locos that would have been available in 1946. So far I have a 681,1654,1615 and a 221.All of them were clunkers so I have been tearing them apart and rebuilding them.I have had some success and most look good, however the E units have been a real problem for me. I then picked up an N&W spirit of 76 set because that's my son's birthyear and he was born within sight of the N&W shops in Roanoke, VA. We just moved back to VA near Roanoke and I now have a place to play in the basement. I hope to start work on a table soon. You folks have been a real help and I really appreciate it.

Below is a copy of a plan that I like but will also add another 4x8 table on the right to make an upsidedown "U" and also a picture of my 221

Lionel also has tenders sold seperately with train sounds for about $80.

I have the modern REA trainsounds car (steam version) and I like it.  Not as great as railsounds but works fine with my conventional silent engines.

I have an S gauge flyer by lionel tmcc mikado what sounds I can get out of it in conventional are good but need tmcc to get the full effect. Also have MTH OSU train and all the sounds are operable with thier transformer/control unit. I may get DCS and run tmcc locos with DCS sometime down the road.

Thanks injuneer !! I was really fascinated by the  sounds also when I got back into trains. Those engines were Lionel with Lionel Railsounds in the I also have an MTH engine wiyh PS-2 sounds in it. Both Lionel & MTH & a few other companies have sounds available with their equipment. You can also install sounds from some of the other aftermarket companies, like http://www.tastudios.com/index2.htm &   http://www.digitdynam.com/&  http://www.electricrr.com/

Check the Lionel site & MTH site for engines you like with sound systems in them . Let us know what you have now & what you might like & maybe someone will have a clip of it to put on here. Do you have any hobby shops in your area ? That's a good place to start. Also if you let us know what area you are in, there may be some one close by or a club with a layout. Hope this helps !!

Thanks, John

Howdy,

After watching the videos that csxt30 put on the Sunday photo fun I was fascinated by the sounds. Is this something you can add to an old train or do you have to buy a new fangled loco to get the sound?
