I did the reset and got the whistle sound and head light flash.

Still no go! I think I did fry something on the R2LC board.

Where can I get a replacement board?

This sounds exactly like one of the problems my son has had with his K-Line Berkshire.  His smoke unit went crazy and was burning up the resistors.  He discussed the problem with a couple upgrade places and the problem was that the R2LC card was damaged.  Full voltage was being fed to the smoke unit and that is why the resistors were being destroyed.  You stated that the smoke control board shorted out but you replaced it.  I would try another R2LC board and see if that corrects the problem.  If it does then the original R2LC card was damaged by the short.

Sounds like you'll have to go to your book and look up restoring features.  This is when you have to use switch and put to program, enter eng Id, aux. then I think it number 7 then number 4 then hit set,  the engine will toot and blink lights, then power down move switch to run then power up.  You should be back at factory default setting.  But check your book for right sequence.

Hi Pat,

Can you clarify what you mean that you "tried" to reset the loco.

Make sure you power down, let it sit, and then power up and try the reset procedure again.

Did you get the headlight flash and whistle toot as an acknowledgement of the reset procedure?

It could be possible when it shorted you may have blown the control for the smoke off.

The smoke out put was getting weak on my UP Big Boy, Lionel Trainmaster.
So I opened it up to look under the hood. After removing the shell and opening up the smoke unit I placed it back on the tracks. After applying power I observed that the element was burnt as well as the wicking.

But just then the pencil that was holding the smoke board up fell out causing the end of the element to short (spark) against the smoke unit housing!

After powering down I replaced the smoke board with a spare. I then powered up and addressed the engine. It is now smoking like crazy!
BUT I did loose the use of buttons #8 (smk off) & #9 (smk on/boost)

I checked all boards and wires and even tried to reset the engine, all to no avail. The only way to shut the plumes of smoke off is with the smk switch.

What the heck did I do?
