Sound problems

I have a Weaver 3-rail Hiawatha Atlantic that has just started experiencing sound problems.I only operate in conventional mode. When engine is first started and is running at low speed, sound fails to operate-no engine or chuff sounds. It instead just makes an electronic clicking sound from tender. When unit gets to about 10 volts, and train has moved about 3 feet, sound finally kicks in. When power is turned off or make direction change,sound immediatly dies. I first thought it might be a battery issue, so I swapped out a fresh battery in tender, as well as made sure battery circuit plug is firmly secured to main board. No effect. These glitches seem to be getting progressively worse each time I run engine. What am I missing? I'm hoping it's something simple,or unit will have to make the long trip to Weaverland!

If the unit has a Railsounds board in it, the battery is only used to provide sounds when the track voltage drops below 7-8 volts.  The unit may need to be "reprogrammed" using a TMCC Base Station and CAB-1.  All Lionel command equipped loco's have a feature setting ID that can get scrambled.  Unlike a PS-1 board, you just need to reprogram the egines feature set code.  If the unit is using a VCO (voltage controlled occilator to determine engine speed and a few other parameters, the VCO made need adjustment.  This usually invovles adjusting some "trim pots", these are small potentiometers located on the VCO board.

Yes, unit does have Railsounds board. It's acting as though unit isn't receiving the battery power when it should. If I can track down someone locally who is using TMCC command control, would they know how to "reset" this engine so it operates correctly in conventional mode? Thanks!
