Jim

Since I have retired and returned to this hobby, I've learned something almost everyday.  With the good people on this forum and their patience with my questions, I will be able to pass on 100 years of history and tradition to my grandson.

Now I know what to tell Grandma to get me for my birthday!!

Thanks again folks!

Doug,

That hopper was built from a kit.  When Lionel offered the 700E and scale freight cars, you could buy them already built, or you could buy the kits.  The cars are are expensive, but the kit boxes are extremely expensive($1000+)!

The 716 hopper was a prewar scale diecast car. These are very desirable cars along with the 714 boxcar, 715 tank car, and 717 caboose. All diecast scale beauties.

Not knowing if it is brass, but it sure looks good.  I'm going to stop by this place and check this one out.   Way beyond my budget,..  never know,.. might find one at a yard sale.  I guess its like looking at a gold nuggett at a casino in Las Vegas, now I know what to look for!!

Looks like it has scale couplers on it. Is this a brass O scale model? O scale stuff in brass goes for big bucks.

Can someone explain why this hopper is so valueable?   "$650.00"  Is this a typo or actually something that rare?   Learn something everyday!  I think it's a typo!!
