The distance is an issue but you may also have problems with the amount of mass/friction you are trying to move/ovecome.  The Ross/Atlas/Gargraves are only throwing the moveable points.  The O-22 is trying to slide that plate.

Chris,

Sounds like it could work but how would you mount the DZ1000 switch machine to the frame of the 022 switch?  You may be able to sub a paper clip for the metal clip or spring that comes with the DZ1000, other problem may be that the 022 switch plate requires too much pull or push for the DZ1000 to handle.  The DZ1000 switch machine has about half the power of an 022 soleniod and is much smaller so you may burn up a DZ1000 switch motor.

Personally I would just go with Ross Custom switches and be done with it! The only thing that you will need besides the DZ1000 switch machine are O gauge to GarGraves adapter pins for the track.

Adding DZ-1000 switch machine to Lionel 022 switches?
Posted by Birds on Wednesday, February 14, 2007 11:43 AM

While I had my 022 switches apart recently I started wondering if it would be possible to remove the Lionel switch machine and add a DZ-1000 switch machine from Z-Stuff for trains.

This would allow one to keep a classic tubular look, but have a lower profile O-31 switch that might allow for a wider variety of engines to traverse it.

The 022 switch rails are moved by a plate under the base.  That plate has a receiving hole in the center of it that sits over a pin on the 022's switch machine.  I was reasoning that if one attached a rod from the DZ-1000 arm and connected it to the switch plate under the 022 switch, then you could keep a classic tubular look but have a lower profile switch.

I know the DZ-1000 is built for Gargraves, Ross, and Atlas.  About the only reason I could think of for this not working would be the distance of the throw for the switch machines arm.

Any thoughts?
