Would you pick this unit over a 2333/43 is same condition? This will be my only locomotive purchase this year - I'm only 27 so I figure if I purchase one nice engine every year and as my income grows I can buy more!

Somebody, anybody, give this man a cigar, a beer and an Amen.
Mine was bought by my Dad before a few years before I was born. It ran under our Christmas tree for years. There is not enough money out there for me to ever consider selling it. It's got some play wear, some paint rubs and bald spots, but 60 years later it runs silky smooth and it is jammed packed with very fond memories.
I have a 1948/1949 726 Berkshire and I couldn't and "wouldn't" sell this for $1,000! I think it is in your heart as to what you like. My 726 will stay with me for the rest of my life. If I see one for sale, I may just snatch it up!!

The Postwar Model Trains library provides some information on this point:
The 726 underwent several changes during its production run. The following summarizes the more notable changes with the estimated year of change:
Brent's price range is pretty accurate. I've noticed 726s selling for big bucks lately on the Bay.
