I love all tracks, 2 or 3 rail or monorail; but for toy trains, nothing beats tubular. It's got that nostalgic art deco look.

Different strokes for different folks (which accounts for why there are so many different track systems out there now).

However, that is one gorgeous layout by any measure, and the scenery and detailing would stand out no matter what track system or type was used.

I'm totally tubular as well. It's been reliable for 100  years so why change. If you add ties and ballast it can certainly look really nice.

Different strokes for different folks.   I agree, Perry has a fabulous layout!  Frank, I also am envious of your layout and like seeing your progress pictures (I hope you make your deadline).  However, for me, I think real depth is added to a layout when solid rail w/ties is used.

It is interesting that you pointed this out, because when I looked at the layout challenge one of my first thoughts was, "Boy, this guy really knows how to put a cool layout together, it would be even better if he had used a more realistic track system..."

While checking out the "Layout Challenge of the Week", I see Perry, who occasionally treats us to some photos in Sunday Photo Fun is one the featured layouts. This is just one of the most beautifully sceniced layouts I have seen, and it appears to be all tubular track.

You can build a super detailed layout and still use the track system must of us grew up with, as evidenced below:
