Question on Accessories
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, November 13, 2003 9:49 AM
I am using MTH power Z-4000 and my question concerns accessories that have thier own transformers - such as the Lionel Tugboat, Walthers 66 Motel, etc. They all have thier own transformers that are difficult to hide and even plug in. Can these be wired to the main transformer?

MTH has the 18 Volt plugs in addition to a 6 and 10 volt (I think?). I want to know if it is possible to wire to one of these. Also what can be incorporated from these two accessoires to work with the AIU and how to wire?

Really appreciate any help.

The transformers for most O gage trains provide an ac output. I'm just guessing, but the reason the accessories have thier own transformer is maybe due to the need to operate them on dc. If that is the case, determine the operating voltage required for the accessory and you could possibly use an inexpensive HO transformer as a power source. This would provide a variable voltage out put. Just be sure to pay attention to polarity as it could really make a difference and possibly cause damage to the accessory if wired with the incorrect polarity. If the accessory is ac then you are home free, just determine the correct operating voltage and use an accessory tap on your existing transformer. Hope this helps- TM
