Help me identify my set
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, November 7, 2003 9:51 PM
OK. As I've mentioned in other posts, I have this postwar set I inherited from my father. It consists of the following parts: (Mind you, this is off the top of my head -- the set's in the attic right now)

44-ton Black & Yellow trim Northern Pacific Diesel Switcher
Black single dome Lionel Lines "Shell" tank car, #6025
Red PRR Curtis "Baby Ruth" box car #X6014
Black #6424 auto flat car with a yellow & white 50's style cars, says "Lionel" on sides
Red Lionel caboose #6257. Rear truck has no coupler.

I've been told by my mother that my father got rid of the original track & obtained the Super-O track that I have, so the set may have come with O-27 track. Also, the original transformer died & my dad replaced it with a 1044 90 Watt unit in the 70s.

I'm interested in finding out what the original catalog number might have been
and what the set might be worth. I'd rate the condition as good -- I played with it a lot when I was a kid and there were more than a few derailments. Until recently, the thing was always set up on the floor, so the cars never really fell far.

The locomotive runs well and is in good running order.

Thanks for your help!

I can't help with a set number but it looks like the NP 44 tonner was only offered in 1956 and 1957. Tracking down those catalogs should help. I'm off to a train show today and will keep an eye out for one.

Hi Tony,

It sounds like you have the 1545 027 set from 1956. This set came with the following:

628 Northern Pacific center cab
6424 flatcar with autos
6014 red baby ruth boxcar
6025 black Gulf single dome tank car
6257 SP-type caboose
eight 027 curved and three straight tracks
6029 uncoupling section
1015 45-watt transformer
The set box was the basket weave pattern type with the trains unboxed in a single layer.

I don't have a recent value on the set. My 1990 Greenberg guide lists the set as $175 in Very Good condition and $300 in Like New condition.

Tim Pignatari

Tim:

Thank you very much! I appreciate the information. Now I know what I have. It's probably worth no where near the $175 since it's not complete.

We had the orginal box until recently. It was in very bad shape, and it wasn't holding itself together, let alone holding any trains.

Thanks again!

Tony
