I bought an MTH T1 Reading steam locomotive and have the DCS system. One thing that the DVD warmed about is mixing diesel ABA or AB units or steam locomotives tenders with PS-1; it said not to intermix PS-1 & PS-2, use matching color labels and Proto Sounds systems or electronics may short out. You can run PS-1 & PS-2 units on the same track but not to directly mix engine hookups. Right now there is no update for PS-1 to PS-2. Also it said that you must have one componant of TMCC(I think it is the CAB-1) to run TMCC with a DCS TIU.
Williams makes a great engine for the money but you must add TMCC or DCS to it.

All great engines. I recently acquired the RailKing Torpedo, and, personal opinion, it's sweet. All those neat functions in a really small package - it's a perfect fit on my Christmas layout. In fact, the engine looks too short, even for RailKing, but hey - it's a toy after all.
If I didn't have TMCC or DCS and didn't plan to get it any time soon, I might go with the Williams J. Nicely done, and nearly bulletproof. Yes, MTH and Lionel products will run in conventional mode, but my enjoyment of my engines increased immensely after I jumped on the command control bandwagon. So much so that I waited for MTH to re-release the Torpedo with Proto 2 rather than buy the earlier release.

You need to decide what engine to buy but I will tell you this much and that you will need to have DCS to get all the features of the MTH engine and you must have TMCC to get all the features of the Lionel engine. TMCC & DCS will not run each others electronics unless you have parts of both control systems. Personally I would go with one control system.
Do you want to spend at least $300.00 to $600.00 on electronic control system or do you want to spend money on locomotives? Also accessory control (AIU)unit by MTH cost at least $90.00.
OK, NEW ENGINE TO ADD TO THE LIST
LIONEL PRR MIKADO, WILLIAMS N&W J, MTH RAILKING PRR TORPEDO?
Dave
It's a TOY, A child's PLAYTHING!!! (Woody from Toy Story)
Wondering what would you pick be for a new engine. The lionel Mikado 11100 PRR that trainworld has onsale with railsounds 5 and tmcc, or the williams type J Norfork and Western? At this current time, I do not have tmcc.
