Shelving brackets?

I am planning a shallow around the walls O guage shelf layout with rudimentary scenery, and maybe one or two buildings. It will be O-31 curves so I wont be  running very heavy locomotives. The deepest it will be is about 10-12'' on the straight runs, and about 3' on the ends for the O-31 curves so the train can circle back. For the sheer sake of convenience, I am wanting to use shelving (the L shaped) brackets to secure the layout to the wall that way I save a ton of money of benchwork. I was planning to put one ever 6'' or so. This will work right?

Fastened to what kind of wall?  Better over studs on 16-inch centers than drywall at 6 inches.

Thanks, I will keep that in mind. A friend of the family has a stud finder that I could borrow.
