The Atlas and MTH software do essentially the same things.  I use Atlas, as that's the track I'm going with.  The MTH software I have came on a disc packaged inside a beginner's guidebook they published (which was not a good purchase; it was just one long advertisment, and not much substance).

MTH has a software program that they supply for free with some of their items. Can't remember for sure, but I think I got it with my membership to the MTH Railroaders club. It is mainly for MTH track, but it works really well. They also include it with some of their trainsets.

I use a Q-Basic program that I have evolved over many years.  You would have to know a little programming to use it, since the layout design is embedded into the program as subroutine calls.

I've been able to use RR software for many other applications as well.  Room layout for other rooms in the house, schematic drawings, etc..  Simply by using the basic shape menu.

Xtrkcad. It's free. www.sillub.com I think (I'm at work so I don't have the bookmark handy). The O library is limited; I measured my track sections and added them manually. After I did that, it worked pretty well.

the lack of suggested alternatives listed thus far speaks volumes.

although yes, it is a bit pricey at $100, it is the best thing out there and worth the dough

Just wondering if there is alternative software to RR-track? $100 for a fairly simple program that I will probably use once seems too expensive to me. I cant find any copies on ebay.
