Here are some pictures including the Nativity in the Park and my senior engineers.  The engineers take their job very seriously!

Work on my layout keeps progressing.  Now if I only had Perry's skill with scenery...  Wow!!

Perry, your layout is always a pleasure to look at.

Track planning software has been a big help with sizing and visualization.

The track plan
  • a modification of Tom's circus layout track plan
  • size = 6' x 14'
  • track = O-31 tubular
  • the grey area in the left corner are tracks going through a mountain
  • the blue track segments in the middle are for a trolley
  • plan includes two reversing loops and multi-train operation

Nice layout Chris!

I really like the crossover at the reversing loop!

Thanks Kurt.

Below is a picture of Tom's original 6' x 9' "Circus" track plan that he posted a while back on the forums.  It is very similar to an old ~1940 6' x 9' plan which can be found reprinted on page 57 of a book called "Operating O and O-27 Trains" (Dist. by MDK, Inc, 1984).

Tom's version offers more flexibility than it's 1940's sibling.  The 1940's plan does not have the two connected right hand turnouts between the inner and outer loops (shown at the bottom of Tom's layout below).  These are what allow for the two reversing loops.  In addition, the 1940's plan had a siding between the inner and outer loops which came off the side of the inner loop and ended near the 45 degree crossover.  Tom's plan does not have the siding.

The two reversing loops make for some very nice runs and add variation.

I made the following changes to Tom's plan:

  • rotated the inner loop 180 degrees
  • relocated the turnouts between the inner to outer loops from the side to the front
  • lengthened the layout
  • lengthening the layout allowed me to make both reversing loops  "tear drop" shaped instead of having one be based on an "S" curve
  • added two more turnouts to the outer loop to create a passenger station siding on the right side.  This siding allows three trains to be run at once (two trains on the outer loop, and one on the inner loop) by staging them at the passenger sidings/stations on the outer loop.

Hey Chris,

I like the changes that you made to this track plan. I have often thought of moving the cross over switches to the side. This makes it much easer to run two trains on this layout.

For those who have not see my Circus layout -

Only NORFOLK SOUTHERN puts their new roster additions into service faster!  My son's BNSF GP38-2 is sweeping past Point of Rocks Station as my B&O GP-9 crosses Keystone viaduct in the background.

Spank, nice pics as always. And to the rest of you guys, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Sunday and New Years Eve on the Roseyville Div of the NS.

The guys on the switchers stop to wish each other a Happy New Year [Atlas B&O and MTH NS, still temped to repaint B&O to NS Wink [;)].  The grain truck is leaving the grain elevator while the tanker truck driver is at Frank's Hotdog stand getting one all the way [that is mustard, onions and hotdog chilli which means NO beans].  Fido runs around the fire hydrant.

All is quit in the Inter Modle yard.
