Derailing on O22 switch; sparking, and voltage plugs
Posted by yallaen on Friday, December 29, 2006 6:43 PM

Ok, so I'm having a problem with one of my O22 switches. When the train goes over it in the "normal" position (straight), it works fine. WHen the train goes over in the "reversed" position (curved) it derails. It doesnt matter which way you go..training or facing movement (into the switch from the points or from the curve). Is there an adjustment I can make?

Also, I have all three pins in all three sides of my switch. WHen the train runs over, it sparks. I had some plastic pins that came with them, and I replaced 1 metal pin with the plastic on two of the three leads into the switch. That stopped the sparking. Refresh my memory about pins/switches please.

Finally, I have a bunch of the terminals that push into the side of the O22 switch to run direct power from the transformer. Each of these has a wire connected to it, with a brass pin on the other end. I have a pic for reference if need be...what are those brass pins for? I have the wires set to my 14v accessory port on the transformer..but it doesnt seem it's quite enough "oompf". I know one switch doesnt fully throw (not to confuse with the derailing above..different switch).

Yallaen,

I use 022 switches exclusively so I have good experience with them.

First of all the derailments. Possibly the switch isn't throwing all the way and locking in the curved position. I've seen this a lot. If this is the case you can adjust the locking bar and/or add another locking bar spring. I've done this on many occassions. You can check this by throwing the switch to the curved position and then using your hand, try to push the switch plate back to the straight position. If you can, it never locked.

The pin thing is important. You should NOT have metal pins in all three sides. You need plastic pins in the inner rail on the straight side and the outer rail on the curve side. Mega important to get non-derail feature and possible recitify your sparking. Sparks could also be because the rails on the switch need to be cleaned/scotchbrited.

The screw or plugs that go into the side of the switch motor are for fixed voltage. You need to run a wire from these to fixed voltage.

If they're not real snappy at 15 volts or so, they need to cleaned and lubed. My 022s are set at 15 volts and they throw with a loud snap perfectly everytime.Smile [:)]

HOpe this helps.

Your entire problem seems to be the absence of the requisite fiber pins.  Have a look:
