Thanks. That is how I thought it should work. It looks like I just have to fiddle with the sensitivity, maybe shade the ITAD from outside light.

This link may be helpful. It describes what the ITAD does before the author begins his modification.

Lee,
Thanks for the suggestions. After some investigation I find that my questions are with MTH's ITAD. I e-mailed MTH, but no reply yet. I have figured out the circuitry, but I need information on how the ITAD functions - does it activate when it sees light or loses light? Does it have an internal IR source and activate when that source reflects off the train, or when there is no reflection? When would the internal delay work - when it sees light or when it loses the light? I am trying to activate the crossing gate (MTH 30-1080) when the train passes the ITAD, and have a delayed gate opening after the train passes.
ChalkieF,
Have you tried emailing MTH? If that don't work try the website for DCS control system. www.mth-railking.com
If you can not find info there then try www.rossswitches.com under sub heading DZ industries as there may be a wiring diagram that you could use.
Assuming that you know how to use the computer to download a PDF file, can not put info onto a PDF file just read the file or print it.
