How do I replace the bulb in my MTH water tower?

I'm not sure whether it is a faulty bulb or circuit board. It never has worked. No burnt areas on circuit board. The wires are soldered to the bulb, and the bulb is held in place with a clip of some kind. Needlenose pliers grab the bulb base but I don't want to pull (push?) too hard and break something. Any way to remove the amber lens from the top?
