All the reasonably priced Lionel, MTH, K-line, Williams, and RMT will run on fastrak and with  transformer in the Thomas set.

The Thomas beginner set is a very nice set up however they did have a problem with the transformer in the set about 2 years ago.  If you get a bad transformer Lionel will replace it but that takes a week or two.  Be sure to set up and test the set long before Christmas morning or presentation to your grandson.  Also, Lionel added a lighted power track to the more recent Thomas sets (or else Thomas will not reverse).  If you get an older set then Lionel will send you a lighted power track.

Again, the set is very nice especially for the price.  One should not have to contact Lionel for the two fixes...but....that is the way it goes and at least Lionel will fix the problems at no cost to you.  Just be sure to check it long before you present it to your grandson.

Sort of.   If you can visit a local hobby store and ask this same question, and they can show you examples of the rolling stock.........................as they say a picture is worth a thousand words, and you will see the size differences between Lionel's products.  Sometimes they build them to scale and sometimes they build them "compressed" meaning that they take some liberties with the scale on certain parts of the model.

However, many of us, including me, mix all the different sizes together on the same layout. Smile [:)]

Thanks for your help. I see that I can buy the Thomas set in 0 scale at a store on ebay. If my grandson really likes the train set up I will add additional track and trains to it as he grows up. I am making the assumption that all Lionel trains are the same size. Is that accurate??

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] mikekc44,

I would get the Thomas Train in Lionel O scale with Fastrac so you can add to the track system later on and add more trains too. Most of the trains will run on any of the new transformers, if you are starting out get new transformers to avoid having problems later on.  For now stay away from two rail in O scale as it is very differant than three rail track.

Depends on your budget, however RMT has some nice trains to add to any three rail Lionel or MTH train set.  Williams Trains are another source for quality trains in Lionel size, won't have all the features of a Lionel but won't have the high price tag either.

I have a 5 yr old grandson and would like to get him a train set for xmas. I would like to have something that could be upgraded and expanded on if he takes to the hobby. He loves thomas the train show. Can I set him up a train set with a thomas engine and then chge over to a lionel type scale model? What gauge would be the right one to start out with? Will the trains all run on the same xformer and rails?? Thanks for your help
