Sounds like you have a wire in the wrong place, don't know how to wire an MTH switch but Lionel's 022 postwar switches have three terminal posts, the center supplies power to the switch controller and the two outside are for the left/right or straight position.  If it is a long wire run you could very easily have a crossed wire.

Problems with MTH O-31 Switches
Posted by wierman2 on Sunday, November 26, 2006 9:33 PM
I'm new to toy trains so please forgive me if I don't know all of the lingo.  I have recently purchased an MTH train set and some additional track.  My track layout contains two ovals (one inside the other).  There are two O-31 left hand switches and two O-31 right hand switches to go from the inner to the outer ovals.  My problem is that one of the left hand switches (the one on the inner oval) always goes to the straight position and stays there no matter what once power is applied to the track.  I had an extra LH switch and tried it in the same position with the same results.  When I take the switch out and test it it works fine.  I believe that I've ruled out that the switch is bad, therefore it must be wiring.  Does anyone have any ideas?
