J C Penny's and Lionels???

Ever year I looked forward to the Penny's cat coming so I could see which Lionel they had showcase that year, I have purchase I think about five over the years, my first being my favorite. The Atlantic Coast Line Grey Ghost, but this year they had a train set, but no Lionel showcased ones, I can only hope that next year it will be back.

You brought back some good memories. We had an E.J. Korvettes that had a hobby/sports department. From around the start of school till spring all the cool hobby stuff would start showing up on the shelves. Trains, slot cars, gas motored planes. And then they had pool tables, ping pong, etc. Its almost hard to find all that stuff in one store now days. And at reasonable prices too. So I guess the 70's werent that bad afterall.

Hello Red-   I remember when Penney's had Lionel Trains in their Toy Dept all year. Same thing with Sears. When my Sister would go to the Mall & ask if I wanted to come along  I would usually say yes as she would most likely go to Sears & I would ask if could go to the Toy Dept & look at the Trains & believe it or not the Sears that we would go to had everything in Lionel's Product Line Back in the 70's Complete sets,Engines,Crossing Gates,Highway Flasher's, Trestle's, Track, & Rolling Stock.(Freight & Passenger cars) Sears had more than Penney's. So, they were at the top of the list to visit.& at Christmas had more Trains to sell also for obvious reasons as well. I also remember some of the prices too. 9200,9400,& 9700 Series Boxcar's sold for around $10.00 Each. Banjo Signals were about $ 12.00, The Highway Flashing Crossing Signal was about $11.50. Passenger Car add-ons for the Pennsy,Milwaukee, & Baltimore & Ohio Passenger Sets were about $15.00 each. Most of the sets Sears had ranged in price from about $45.00 up to maybe $110.00 each in those days. Lionel did make some Trains in those days that had lots of Track & some Switch Track's also like the Grand National, Illinoise Central Set, etc. Which accounted for the price differences & also Premium Engines like U-Boats or GP-9s or Steam Engines with Smoke & Sound of Steam like the Cheasapeake Flyer( They were about $75.00 sets then) Those were good times & I'll remember them as long as I live. I did'nt see any at our local Penny's last weekend but they have Lionel wall clocks on sale.

Well there was a display with three Lionel train sets set up and the trains running. I loved the NASCAR set they had, thirty percent off. If I had the money, I would have bought it.
