I received this set when I was little.  It was Bachmann's first attempt at G scale, but overall the set held up nicely especially for the price.  The transmitter uses a 9V battery, however you can purchase a 6 cell 7.2V rechargeable battery pack (same type used on R/C cars, boats, and R/C electric aircraft) to power the locomotive via a 2 prong outlet located inside the battery compartment under the floor (if I remember).

Buckeye is correct, it will run nicely at slow speeds.  Be mindful of the plastic gears though, they are loud at high speeds and will strip if the unit is thrown into reverse.

Overall a nice set for such a price. I believe it sold for $60.00 at Toys R Us back in the early 1990s, so you certainly did not get ripped off...

The older big haulers were prone to some mechanical (gear) problems.   I wouldn't run it outside in the snow or rain.  They are great for running under the tree at a nice slow speed with small wrapped gifts and candy in the cars.

I dont think you can go wrong for $25. These are G scale trains. I think Bachmann started making these in the early 1990's, but not sure. Perfect for an under the tree set. Google Bachmann Big Hauler and you will find a lot of info. Good-luck. And if you get hooked on trains check out the Garden Railroad forums. They model in G.

Can anyone give me info on The Original Bachmann Big Hauler Gold Rush train set? I just bought it from a bargin shop for 25 bucks. Did Iget ripped off? It is in the original box and looks like it has never really been used much. Can anyone tell me how old this set is or knows where I can contact someone who does. I plan to use it this Christmas for under the tree.
