Southern Pacific Command Control U33C
Posted by proactive on Friday, October 20, 2006 12:13 PM

A few weeks ago, I purchased the new Souther Pacific U33C.  Railsounds 5.0.  The sound is great and I especially like the several RPM levels.  I would recommend it.  I did not get the non-powered one to match though.  My only concern was that it is a fairly big engine for 031.  I have a 12 table layout and I had to redo an area due to right clearance.  It was a bit of work but as many others, I enjoy building the layout more than running it.

Proactive,   I'm interested in this engine. Two questions  Does it make that unique sound that the U33's make as they go by (that bla, bla, bla,)and I wonder if it's better to go the extra mile and buy another powered engine  to lash'em up and hear the "big" motors as they go by. Don't you think so, Proactive?

Done both.  Bought dummy and put smoke and lights in it.  Also, bought two powered units and lashed them up.  I like the lashup of the two [or more powered units].  With the newer can motors and all the power they produce, one powered unit can pull a nice train.  Guess it depends on your train budget.

The sound is unique.  I have the Reading 5513 and CSX command Control diesels, the SP is unique and sounds way more powerful than the other two.  I really think it was worth the money.  I also purchased the CSX with Railsounds 5 as well the same day, the sound on the SP towers the CSX.  I was disappointed in the CSX compared to the SP.  For one thing the SP is just a unique design to it while the CSX is the same body as the Reading.  The SP is now my favorite engine.  One other thing the SP has over the other two is that it has a magnetic door on top that pops right off and the battery easily goes in.  The other two are very difficult to install the battery.

I also bought the mathing SP caboose on ebay from about year 2000 or so and it matches perfectly.

Well I think you talked me into getting one of those SP units. I hope they are still around in a couple of months so I can get hopefully another of these powered units. Back in the early Eighties my son and I would go to Tehechapy Loop in Southern California and watched these monsters help pushed the long freights up hill for the Southern Pacific. These long freights consisted of SD45's and U33C's. What memories. Now Lionel has these big guys for collection. What luck. Thanks proactive.
