It took me since my father passed away in 1996 until November 2006 to find a wind up key at a train show. I did not have any luck on E-Bay either. The dealer was part of the Ozark Train Club and had a table at the show. He only charged me five dollars for the key. You might be able to try contacting the club and see what luck you might have.
The Doctor Is in !!! Perhaps this might be too easy: Why don't you check with the parts dealers???????
I have a wind up loco which appers to be a marx and my train dealer had a wind up key. Check with Olsen's and the other dealers, It makes more sense than a "jury-rigged" key. Just my two yen!

I've also seen in some older hardware stores they have real long allen wrenches, I'd say about 8 to 10 inches long with a handle already bent into it, that would be perfect too !!
Thanks, John

I dont have a Marx wind-up, but I have a Unique Art wind-up. It uses a clock wind key. Try a clock shop if you can find one. Or sometimes antique shops have clock keys. Old time hardware stores may have them too. Bring your engine with as there are different sizes.
If you cant find one, sometimes they are available on e-bay listed under Marx.
Good-luck
