I visit eBay and Choo Choo auctions to name a few.

These repaints are former beaters that the artist has refurbished with new and interesting paint schemes. I think they are a joy to behold. Especially a certain Marx loco, Dr, John.

If it's a junked up piece it's not blasphemy: a non mint piece is not worth that much anyway. I contacted some of the repaint places that advertise in CTT and they charge $150 and up for a repaint job. People have taken newer engines and had them repainted to match a regional area's railroads. We had a guy in our train club, the Lionel Modular Group in Plano,Tx(Dallas) who took the scale D&RGW Alco set from the 80's (and this was in 1989!!!) and had it repainted for Southern Pacific Daylight colors. THIS was a shock for us!!! But if it's your train it's none of my business.

Yep, it is, when you do it on a mint engine. But most of them are beaten and don't bring any postwar fan in any form of emotion. With a new and dearing paint job, they are attractive and special again. There will be enough original postwar for sale; why don't do something nice and completely different with some of them?

Jim, you are absolutely right. I seem to recall a certain custom painted Marx 1666 that fit that category.

I've been buying $10 marx engines and combining parts and repainting any color that looks good. Haven't done a lionel yet but have two I plan on painting this winter. Can't afford new stuff and it's all black anyway.

I roam around online auction sites a lot. One thing I've noticed lately is more older O27 locomotives (Marx and to a lesser extent Lionel) from the post war and later periods are being customized with new paint schemes and in some cases much more. Many of these repaints and customizations look great. Some look spectacular. And they do well at auction. I'd wager that they sell for a much higher price than they would have in their pre-customized condition. Is this the next trend in our hobby - customizing beater and runner grade locomotives into one-of-a-kind gems?
