I think you've chosen the right way to go. A repro tender shell will give you the new look without compromising the history of the piece.

I would like to thank everyone for their replies.  I think I will just live with the paint chips, or I might buy a repro tender shell.

P.S.
You might want to strip the old paint off first by soaking the shell in Castrol Super Clean.

Krylon paint does match post war Lionel pretty weel. However, it isn't plastic compatible. A layer of primer is recommended before the Krylon is applied.

WWW.trainenamel.com sells paint the exactly duplicates many Lionel paints from the pre and post war eras.

I don't know how it matches up color wise, but Floquill is really excellent model railroad paint and I would be surprised if their "Engine Black" wasn't dead on or close to it. From what I understand, it is made for painting trains, so probably wouldn't do any harm, although you might want to check with the manufacturer first.

I just purchased a 2466WX tender, and there are numerous large paint chips.  The paint looks like it would be close to Krylon 1613 Semi Flat Black.  Does anybody know if this paint will harm the plastic tender shell?  Any info would be appreciated.
