My controls have sort of grown into this size.  Mounted on/in two computer printer stands that were about to be tossed out.  Not the neatest but it gets the job done and even leaves a little room for a few snacks.  As my layout controls are at my back when I am at my computer, space is at a premium.  The rollers on the stands let me push them back flush with the front of the layout when I am not running trains & roll them out when I do.

My set up sounds very similar to Roger’s.  I have three “mini” control panels planned, with one almost implemented, it is mounted and in operation but needs a few labels and the such.  My layout is around the room so I put a control panel per side, except for one.

 

I used Plexiglas, taping out on the back side a miniature schematic then putting down a coat of purple paint.  I then removed the tape and painted the actual track schematic area in silver.  I chose purple and silver as I am running a lot of ACL pieces.  I then ripped some 2x4s and created a frame for the panel which I stained.  Finally I added the Atlas switch controls, push buttons and toggles.

 

My TMCC base and SC2 are mounted in small shelves hung from the bench work and my transformers are on a small shelf unit I build beneath the bench work.

Good question. I've been pondering about this. Since the layout is on a raised crawlspace, I take advantage of the top of the concrete wall to arrange everything there. Right now, I have two Lionel train set controllers on either side of my venerable "R" transformer. - it is right at the foot of the stairs into the basement. I'm thinking of mounting some sound and switch buttons nearby, but will probably not set them up to avoid the rats nest wiring look. This arrangement lets me stand behind my 4 year old chief engineer as he stands before the controllers on a step stool. Another upside is its under one of the few sources of direct light - the biggest downside is my view down-track is blocked by the radon vent pipe and roof support pole.

I have two type-Z transformers mounted on an old portable-TV cart, with a long umbilical cord so that I can move it around.  Switch controllers are along the edge of the table, tucked halfway under the board.  Five block-control toggle switches are on a small aluminum shelf also tacked to the table edge.  The prewar transformer and rheostats for the overhead loop are screwed to the wall.

I built a control panel with the face of 1/8" thick aluminum.  I have a schematic of the layout on the panel with mini-switches and buttons for operating switches, uncoupling tracks etc..  Since I used Ross switches with the DZ operators and didn't want to face mount the button operator, I took one appart and duplicated the circuit using double throw, momentary contact, return to center switch with LED's as indicator lights on the panel.

Since I run TMCC my transformers are located on a shelve under the panel for easy access to the breakers shoud  I have a derailment that trips the breakers.  My accessory transformers are located a little bit less accessible under the layout.

I am in the process of creating a 10'x12' L-shaped layout. I've attached my control panel by hinges to the edge of the layout, so I can adjust the angle. I like the control panel in full view, because I enjoy the look of the postwar Lionel controls.

Just wondering: Where are your layout controls located ie. transformer, remote switches et al?  Are they in a slide-out drawer; attached to an extension of the layout itself; on a separate stand along side of the layout; or ......? Are they out in the open or are they hidden from view?

Right now, mine are located on shelf hanging on the side of the layout.  As always, thank you for your input.
