American Flyer #565 E unit: HELP!

I have recently acquired a lovely little 3/16" AF #565. It is an O Gauge locomotive, and appears to be in excellent shape. When powered up the headlight lights, and there is a sound LIKE an old Lionel E-unit.

The motor on this engine is a worm gear, and it obtains third rail power from the tender. That all works OK, but I cannot get any thing but a buzzy sound. No evidence that there is any way to get it in gear. So I took out every thing I c ould take out (except the back part of the motor itself) and NUTS, I cannot get the motor assembly out of the boiler shell. The E unit lever seems to be keeping the motor in place, but darned if I can see any way to drop it out. BUT I am learning a lot about how this little beauty was put together. Seems very well made.

Any ideas???
