There were no protoype cars.  The movie cars were heavweights (clerestory roof line) with light weight  (two axe modern design) trucks.  The books cars look like streamliners on the outside and heavyweights on the inside?  The only thing that seems consistant was the paint scheme.  It looks a lot like the Erie Lackawanna marroon and grey.   I've often wondered if the author had seen the Phoebee Snow or some other EL train and based his illustrations on that.  Good luck with the project.

Scott,

You need to post over on the Model Railroader Forum. We're all "O", "S", and "G" scale guys here. Sounds like a fun project though!

Polar Express Passenger Cars
Posted by scottlamers on Sunday, July 23, 2006 5:45 AM

I have just pre-ordered the HO Berkshire 2-8-4 Pere Marquette so that I can start to build my kids a 'polar express' train. My question is, what passenger cars are available that would make for a reasonably close (not exact) setup?

Thanks

Scott

Thanks, Scott Lamers
