DIY's Workin' On the Railroad

I just visited their web site for the first time in a while. Evidently, new episodes started airing yesterday. A five-part series on building a garden railroad. Other episodes include a visit to Kalmbach headquarters, a show on backdrops, and a visit to Kent Johnson's layout. The bad news is that the show now airs at 7:30 AM on Tuesdays.

Wife told me she saw one last week at some odd time. Didn't pay much of attention to what she said as I figured it was re-runs. Interesting.

I have TiVO set up to capture these. Our DirectTV is running them at 7:30 AM Tuesdays. The past few weeks have covered city scenes (I actually got some good info on creating sidewalks), mountains and bridges. As mentioned, yesterday started a multi-episode series on garden railroads.

The DIY web site does have a recap of previously aired episodes key points.

Hello All:

What station is this on? I have never heard of this program. I also have a Tivo and have put in several railroading keywords and this program has never come up.

Regards,

I hate that they moved from the 8pm Sat. slot, but I am glad that they are branching out from HO. Purhaps we can convince them to change times.

I have my Digital Video Recorder set to record all episodes regardless of the timeslot. I did see the begining of the Garden railroad. Looks like a two-part piece.

Hi Guys -- Sorry I didn't get a chance to make a posting before I left on an extended holiday weekend, but too just got word that the second season of DIY's "Workin' on the Railroad" series launched on July 4th.
I know many of you watched an enjoyed the show, so I think you get a kick from many of the shows set to air. The garden show couldn't be timed any better, as I'm anxious to get rid of the weeds in my yard and replace them with rock ballast and eventually a railroad right of way. The producer also mentioned that my home layout (still under construction) will appear on the August 15th show -- I haven't seen any of the footage, but I trust the video editors earned their salary the day they worked on that show! Other shows will also feature O gauge trains, as I shoot a few additional How-To segment in the studio.
There's no certainy that there'll be a third season, as the ratings (number of viewers) will likely decline with 7:30 a.m. EST slot. But with enough positive feedback from you folks, the DIY folks just might take your comments to heart. If you see something you like on the series, be sure to share that both here on the CTT forum and at the DIY website (diynetwork.com) .

I didn't see any apparent place to comment about shows on the DIY site, so I'll post my positive feedback here.

My kids and I love the show. We never missed an episode. I definitely learned a lot and was often inspired just from watching. When it was on Saturday nights, we'd all watch it together. Now that it's on Tuesdays at 7:30 AM, we won't be able to watch it together, unless we record it.

Note to self: Buy VHS tape. Record Workin on The Railroad . . .

Kent,
Thanks for your post. Yeah, 0730 on Tuesday is a real show killer. I hope we can start a little message writing so that they will put it in a better time slot. Perhaps CTT can do a little write up about the program and get a letter writing campagn going.
Thanks again,
Dennis

Real quick -- DIY has a message board area at the following siteā€¦ http://boards.diynetwork.com/eve
This area is a bit buried, so I'll also make a point to relay as many of our CTT forum comments to the producers of the show. Since these guys aren't DIY employees, it isn't likely they can change the scheduling -- from what I gather, only overwhelming public reaction and Nielsen ratings can effect that change.
At any rate, it would be great to let this major network know that they've hit the mark with their series -- that just may encourage them (or others) to try it again!

I joined the message board and will contribute. I also emailed DIY and requested the show be aired in prime time and more O Gauge content.
Thanks,
Dennis

Hello Kent! You should hire Dave Vergun & BB the Beagle to help out on your outdoor layout. I understand BB really knows her stuff.[;)][:)][:o)] & Dave knows a few tricks also.[;)][:)] Take Care.

What is the DIY network? Is it a dish network of some type?

Rogruth, DIY is a cable channel, like HGTV or The History Channel. Available on most (I think) cable and dish systems. Working on the Railroad is one of the networks 30 minute shows. I think it is quite excellent. Mostly geared towards beginners so far, but it does show you the latest goodies available today. Nicely done. If you like the show, let them know. So it stays around. Their Radio Controlled show has also featured some trains. G scale I think.

Just checked into the DIY website -- looks like their online schedule says the segment featuring my layout will appear on Aug. 8th. I wouldn't have missed it, as I'm viewing all the segments on the garden railway construction anyhow. Even my son is willing to pass up viewing eposides of Sponge Bob Squarepants to watch WOTR at 6:30 a.m. CST!

P.s. The Aug. 8th episode also looks to have footage from a studio demo I did using sound-equipped Lionel and MTH locos -- crank up the surround sound home theater for this one guys!

Wouldn't miss it for the world, Kent! I'll video tape it.
