Bulkhead flatcar can haul many loads; versitile

We start with a Weaver 3-rail bulkhead car…seems OK but would be boring to always run behind the locomotive, so…



We do some slicing and dicing, add some HO rails on the sides for supporting stakes…

Then we load with copper pipes



changed load to wood!





See how flexible the bulkhead flatcar is?

Later, I'll fashion other types of loads like bricks, other colorful plastic covering lumber; odd type loads and loads with tarps.

Dave, Stop by one of your local auto parts stores and pick up some of the real narrow black pinstriping tape. It looks real good as steel banding on gondola & flat loads.

Very nice job, HO rails who would've thought, then Doug's idea that's great. I really like the forum for this type of info. I am confused on one thing, maybe I'm reading into it, but why did you remark about the bulkhead car "always" running behind the engine. Is their some reason ? prototypical realism? curious.

Thanks for tip on load. Don, it has batteries inside that power the loco. The loads conceal the battery gear :-)

Oh, now I understand. Makes sense that is extremely effective with the copper pipes and lumber, very, very creative way of hiding the batteries. That bridge and surrounding scenery is fantastic!!!!!!!

John, Every single train and locomotive you see is 3-rail with big couplers and flanges: from Weaver, Lionel, MTH, K-Line, Industrial Rail. The 3rd rail is missing b/c I converted to R/C and used the center rail to extend operations and lay more track.

If you notice, S scale "toy" trains use 2 rails and fit into this forum.

I feel that tubular rail is the most traditional style track and the one I have always used and preferred. The darkened center rail is an attemp to camouflage the 3rd rail. Yet, those who use GG and Realtrax and Atlas etc, still consider their layouts "toy" as do those with "scale" stuff that's toy. There are many gradations of what one considers "toy." But I suppose the best description is that they're all toys.

It's tough modeling what I model and getting any feedback from anyone or conversation. Why?

Toy train folk look and see just 2 rails in O that look scale.

2-rail O guys see oversize couplers and flanges and semi scale stuff and turn up noses

Garden guys see tiny trains that don't belong in the garden and should be G scale, made for outdoors.

I tell ya, it's tough getting any friends.

(Actually, I do plan to eventually use my tubular rails b/c I want real rust on my rails; there's a really long spur that I plan to eventually build using 027 tubes (but removing 3rd rail and these will connect to the tracks you see.[:D])

Sometimes some folks are so far ahead nobody understands them. I read your thread TONIGHT regarding RC with O scale, and now I understand what you are doing. Holy smokes talk about innovative! We will be able to say we knew you when.......... I really think you are at the very begining of the next significant variation of this hobby. With what you are doing could really pose a significant thread to both TMCC and DCS. (if I understand correctly) At a significant lower cost!!

Being able to have a totally portable layout with Remote Control.....
No wiring of any significance
Total freedom

I know I sure would like to try it. Also you need to write an article, with pictures and send to CTT for publication, or even the other train magazine. I you ready to do any upgrades or cross grades? Whatever you would call it (UPGRADE). Taking a basic engine and adding RC.

Soon as you figure out a price, let me know. Also if you need a beta test site, or longer test sessions especially in the winter, I'm available.

This forum and information just doesn't stop... Really impressive !!! I Like it !!!
