Lionel 2349 Mystery - Help needed to recreate Set!
Posted by FEClionel on Thursday, June 15, 2006 10:23 AM
I recently pruchased a 2349 NP GP-9 with its original box for an extremely low price. The engine is in EX condition and the box is just as nice. My question is this engine came in a brown stamped box not in the orange boxes from the 1960 - did the 59 set have this box or was this item available separate sale and that is what I have. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have to check another source re the boxes. The 59 NP diesel set included the following cars:

3512,3435,6424,6062, and 6017.

Set was designated as 1623W. There were a number of changes to the boxes at this time. Master cartons (brown corrugated) were used both for seperate sale and in set boxes to provide additional protection for the heavier powered units. Orange "display boxes" were usually reserved for tenders/dummies/rolling stock.

Thanks for the info - kind of an odd set a couple premium cars and rounded out with a basic caboose? Now I am on the search for the rolling stock and the set box!

FEClionel,

The 2349 also came in 1960 catalog outfit no. 2549W as well as one promotional outfit in 1960. The 2549W included a 3540, 6470, 6819, 6650 and 3535.

All of these sets included a tan colored corrugated box for the 2349. It didn't come in an "Orange" box, but an "Orange" box sleeve does exist.

So, you can go either way in trying to assemble an outfit.

Good Luck.

FEClionel,

You'll never find the promotional outfit as it was a bulk packed outfit for a customer out east. I'll cover it in my upcoming book.

The 2349 was from one of the two catalog outfits "chukn" and I provided info on.

There were numerous stores in St. Louis selling Lionel trains in the late 50's early 60's. Two that I've researched for my upcoming promotional outfit book were Stix Baer & Fuller and Western Auto. They were both sold catalog and promotional outfits.

Good Luck.
