As John says, being that your train is HO, the people over on the Model Railroader forums would have more information for you. This forum deals with larger gauges.

AHM is no longer in business. You can find out more about AHM at http://tycotrain.tripod.com/ahmhoscaletrainscollectorsresource/ and probably identify exactly what engine and cars you have. As far as value goes, I'd check out ebay. When you say that you are a "potential train lover", I assume that you are possibly considering getting involved in model trains. Way to go! As I said, the guys over on the MR forums know their HO and will probably be able to tell you anything you want to know about getting started in model railroading.
