Just got my copy this am. What's the differance between high rail and scale rail? I'm looking at this LIRR 4-4-0 on pg 83 , very nice but pricey. Most of my layout is made up with 0-31 with one oval of 0-42 track. This engine can run on either one of the above mentioned radii. [:)][:)]........Felix

This issue was a winner from front to back. It even made me want to go out and buy a General set!

Loved the Plasticville articles and the Massachusetts guy's layout.

I also think Kent's track plan is a doozie. Very nice.

And all Charles Ro had for advertising was a one page generic store ad. Hmmm . . .

Hopefully, I will be able to write something good about CTT today, but my copy is being held hostage by the USPS. I think they must keep it in the break room at the post office for a few days before sending it my way.

Saving my new copy for vacation in a few weeks so I have something to read while the bride is driving. Felix, I would guess the difference as CTT uses those terms is 'high-rail' is a somewhat more realistic - maybe more scenicked - 3-rail layout and 'scale' is more exactly O 'scale' .. 1:48. I have also seen 'scale' refer to 2-rail O gauge.

[:)] Doug I never noticed a difference in the wheels of this engine. I allways thought the size of how the scale engines were built. I may pick up the high wheel model that runs on 0-31 curves...... Felix

I got mine on the 28th. Some good articles. It seems a little thinner than usual. I think it is less adds or maybe thinner paper. Didn't count pages but the articles seem about the same length.

I senior moment I guess, it was the 27th.

One sign the industry has changed since the late 1990s. The 1997 July issue had 140 pages compared with 100 in 2006.


Still things are infinitely better than in 1987 when there was no magazine worth talking about that was devoted primarily to three rail toy trains. And everytime you wanted to change direction, you had to perform the neutral-change direction cha-cha-cha ;). And the improvement in product variety and quality since 1987 is astonishing to say the least.

Still haven't seen mine yet. No mail showed up as of 5 pm. We live on a fill in route, it seems that whatever carrier gets back and wants OT gets our route and we aren't even considered rural. Some days our mail is here before noon, others I find it when I go out to get the paper in the morning. Isn't the USPS wonderful? Pay more for less service.

I buy my magazines at B&N. If it gets to the shelves next month (June) it's right on time--even early for a July issue--as far as I am concerned. I only subscribe to two model railroad magazines--"Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette" (by far the slickest model railroadfing magazine published), and "ZTrack"--because those two are not readily available from most dealers.

I figure that when a magazine gets into my hands it's still new to me, regardless of any prior discussions on the various forums, most of which seem to focus on when a magazine is received (or not received), with little attention given to the content.

I don't think we could sing higher praises for CTT. When we have comments, we readilly give them and within short order, they respond. We just like to get excited about what's in the next issue.

Subscribers hoping for a 10th yearly issue are getting their wish, sort of! Included with the July issue is a big come-on for a Special Issue, "All Star Electric Trains". Surprise: You'll have to pay extra for it....$6.95. Looks like CTT is following its big brother Model Railroader into the very lucrative world of special issues outside of the subscription package. 38 bucks ain't buying what it used to. John Harding

FWIW, for the first time since they stopped shipping in bags, my CTT came damaged. One interior page and the back cover were torn (interestingly, the interior page was only about 1/3 of the way in). Not that my panties are in a wad over it: I just wanted to pint out a pretty good record.

Not only was Kent's layout good, but there is sage advice for anyone starting a new layout, regardless of size. It made me think!

The articles on detailing Plasticville were great. I really enjoyed them. I had already detailed each of the 3 featured items long before the issue came out, including painting the telephone poles as Dennis did. But last night, I took a few colored pencils and went over the telephone poles. What a difference! I got the idea from Dennis' article. He used pastels and got the same results.

And Kent's track plan was awesome. I'm going to sta***hat away until I can find the space to build it. Kent mentioned that it was for his dad, who dismantled his former layout after 35 years of use. When I read that, I was struck by how hard that must have been to take that layout apart. Not physically, but emotionally. There must have been a lot of memories tied in to that old layout. I can't imagine.

Great issue all around.
