Memorial Day -- How many Vets?

Happy Memorial Day ... Be Safe, Enjoy Family and Friends, and Remember our Vets, ACTIVE, Fallen, and those still around.

Last summer, my family took a road trip from L.A. to Nashville. We stopped in Branson, and I was overwhelmed with the legimate care, courtesy, and concern that was emphasized for our Vets. EVERY show asked that they stand to be recognized, and thanked for their service. Most business offered some sort of discount.

Really made me proud to be American, and was so great to see people really did care for the sacrifices that were made. The entire country could benefit if we honored our military a little more often.

My Grandfather served as an aircraft mecanic in WWII.
I have never met him as he passed when my father was 14 years old my father was a year older than Iam now.

I wish for everyone, a very Happy Memorial Day.
I served a 2 year tour with the U.S.Army in Germany from 1961-1963.
Watched them build the Berlin wall. Lots of barbed wire.
My Dad was in the Pacific in WW ll, Invasion of Philippine Islands.
I am very proud to be an American.

John - Phan Rang was 15 miles from Natrang. Been to Touy Hoa, When I went to Thailand had to "hitchhike" thru Nam. Would go to base Ops and get the next flight out wherever it was going. Went up and down country, visiting guys I knew at the different bases, it took 3 weeks to accomplish 6 hour direct flight. I maintained the Auto Pilot systems on the fighters. We had a OV1 and OV10 unit next door to us. Also their FAC-U (Forward Air Controller - University)

My grandmother had told me, that we had a family member in every war the US fought in. The only exception was Saudi a few years ago. My nephew is currently in Army, going to Afghanstan in August. (Dad was in Navy, during WWII, G-Dad Army WWI, I had one uncle with Patton, (my Aunt gave me a book that was issued to members of the 3rd Army, subsequent to the war illustrating all the battles.) Another uncle was at Normandie.

My grandfather gave me a Remington Revolver that his grandfather gave him. It was used in the Civil war by his Uncle. The Revolver is a .45 caliber, octogon barrell. I have a letter my grandfather got from Remingon in 1961, that based upon the serial number 5,000 were made. I have never fired it because I know two of the chambers are shorted together, and certainly the metal is fatigued. I do have the caps and balls it used, and a powder horn for it. Also, the original holster. The gun is my most prized possesion, since its been in the family for over 150 years. (Used by the Union Army)

My uncle Bill was a mechanic on a bomber flying missions over Germany.

My Dad (I was born when he was just 23) was stationed in Germany. My mom went over to be with him in off-base housing and that's how my sister and I ended up being born in Germany. Then he was transferred to Vietnam, Captain John P. Fortner, with the 25th Infantry (Electric Strawberry). He was in Cu Chi at one point and he has a book about the tunnels there that I read.

I came over on the USS randall at the same time with Elvis Presley . I think he was sent to a tank divison. some place near where you were stationed.Never made it to Berlin because of the travel restrictions but I was on TDY to most of the other posts thru out the american zone at that time. Ten Years in the Minnesota Army National Guard. 1/194th Mech. Infantry. 1990-2000. As a Cook! In fact, my older brother, and my younger brother cooked along side with me. Best duty we ever had was getting called for the 1997 Red River Valley flood in Grand Forks. Never seem such an out-pouring of kindness and support on behalf of the folks in the valley, and the troops called in to help. My Dad was drafted twice. I believe in 1958, when the Berlin Wall went up, and again in the early sixties. I may not have my dates right, but I know his ticket was punched twice. My Dad's three oldest brother fought in WWII. Two in the Pacific,, one in Europe. All survived, but two have gone home to be with the Lord. Many more family members who've served this great country of ours going back to the Civil War. Too numerous to list.
