Yep, this internet, and all of its offspring (forums, email, shopping) have really made it a global community. Be glad to offer my 2 cents for your project. Though I'm still pretty green myself. It was my first project, and is still on going. My son was thrilled the day I handed it to him. Then he heard the chuff and whistle from another loco I just upgraded with an electricrr sound unit and I got "The Look" (the how come mine doesn't sound like THAT look). So it's back to the shop for more mods (as $$$ allows).

Thanks for getting back to me. John, Bomber, I emailed you both privately. I may need both of what you have. Bobby, I would like to touch base with how you did your project, you have given me more ideas about mine. Ain't this site great! It is good to be able to be in touch with like minded (at least as far as trains), people, even though we are thousands of miles apart.

dwiemer,
I fixed up an old willowing late model 2026 for my son and it was a lot of fun. New paint job, handrails, rebuilt the motor, converted to resistor smoke generator (put in 2 resistors spead apart), added constant voltage LED headlight, replaced the two front jewels with constant lighting LEDs and added reverse lighting to the whistle tender (though they're on all the time). Next month I'll be ordering an electronic whistle/chuff from electricrr (boy they sound great) to complete the transformation (although I'm considering using a completely different tender for the new electronic whistle).

You'll enjoy this project, I'm sure. I'm looking forward to seeing the project unfold.

Have Fun,

Bobby

Thanks Gil and John,
I have been keeping up with the Bay, but I get outbid as I am trying to keep this on the cheap. Figure I will get a little experience with this project stuff and then pour a little money into a better engine/project.

Dennis, I assume you know that the Chief will not be the source of your fixer upper. It's difficult to have a fixer upper when they roll of the tracks rite onto the carpet. [swg]

Looking for a fixer upper
Posted by dwiemer on Wednesday, May 24, 2006 2:28 PM
If anyone has, or knows of a fixer upper steam engine that I can purchase for a very reasonable amount, I am hoping to do a project. Ideally, this would be a diecast engine with some amount of detail, such as a 2025 or so. No breaks that would require a welder to fix. If this goes well, I may actually have something to submit to CTT for a project.
Thanks,
dennis
