Uneven current on layout

Uneven current on layout

I am building a two tier layout. The main layout is approx. 6X14. The upper layout is approx 3X10. They are both powered and running independently of each other. The problem is the track on both layouts has full power as it nears the wire lock-on and decrease dramatically the further it is from the wire lock-on. So how do I get even current throughout the entire lenngth of each layout.

You need to add feeders to the track further down the line. Best way is to run a 12 or 14 gauge bus wire down the length of the layout. From this bus you can use 16 gauge feeders connected to the track and fed down under the table, then soldered/connected to the bus wire. Of course the bus wire needs to be first connected to the power supply.

would that be the same thing as just using more lock-ons on the same 2 rails along the length of the tracks, or is it just a matter of adding a wire to the track from the same lock on?

Yes, you could add more lock-ons. Many people prefer to solder the wires for a better connection. I have also seen spade type electrical connectors used where the spade is wedged up underneath inside the tubular track. I guess it will depend on what type of track you are using.

Try using power lockons every four to five feet to provide better electrical connections, if you are using Lionel track it is a must to have additional lockons for power. Place an extra lockon where the locomotive slows down a little. You can try using a digital multimeter to find power loss but that does not always find smaller power losses.
