Old Erector Train

I purchased an old erector train engine and car today at a tag sale. I have never seen one of these before. Have any of you had one or seen one. Do they have any value.

I have seen them. In fact, I think that they still make one, but not sure of the scale. I believe it is different from the ones that they used to produce. It is a neat looking engine and If I come across one at a good price, it would have to join my fleet. Congratulations!

If what you have is an original Gilbert piece, it could be one of two items, both of which are very valuable.

The first was a very large model of a New York Central Hudson, which was around two and half feet long when fully assembled and weighed nine pounds. Most of the parts that went into it were completely custom-made for the Hudson set. The minimum value on a reasonably complete set is around $2000, with some of the more elaborate sets being worth more. There were also a couple of sets that could build a tender, all of which are more valuable. Most collectors would probably pay in excess of $500(very conservative estimate) for an assembled model, provided that all of the parts were present.

The other Erector train set was the Electric Train Set, which included an O gauge American Flyer engine and parts to build companion cars. From your description, it does not sound like this is the one you have, but I felt that it was worth mentioning. A reasonably complete Electric train set is worth well in excess of $1000.

The third option is a recent vintage locomotive made by Meccanno bearing the Erector name. It's mostly made of plastic, and will run on G scale track. Considering that the set is available new for around $100, an assembled model probably wouldn't have a whole lot of value.

A picture would be very helpful in identifying what you have.
