Crane Sound Car
Posted by MartyE on Thursday, May 4, 2006 8:19 PM
My sound car stopped working. All I get is a low level hiss. Checked the volume pot. Checked the board seating. I did have a incident where I there was a derailment on that block but the sound car did not leave the track. Is there a reset code can't seem to find the manual. Also any other ideas?

Manual is available on Lionel web site. Don't see a reset code. Any chance you shut down the sounds or volume with the CAB-1? AUX-1 8 and 9?

The car has a dummy board and should be programmed to same ID as the crane car. You could try using the reset code for the crane car? It's probably ID 5 or 6, try Lionel tech support for specific code.

Other things to try

Test speaker,
Check /reseat boards for loose connection
Check antenna for loose connection

Your hiss is white noise. This comes from an audio amplifier with no input signal. The amplifier portion of your car is working, it's the sound generating part that's failed. Best to contact Lionel to see if you should attempt repair yourself or send it back.

Well as they say crane sound car heal thy self. Went down just now and fired up the layout. The car works as normal. This sort of reminds me of the issues Rod M was having on the OGR forum with his Crane car. There was a weather front coming in last night.[:D] Seriously though it seems fine today. I guess I'll keep an ear on it.

Actually just went back and re-read Rods posts on the subject and it sure sounds a lot like what was happening to him. Might have to watch the weather man and listen to the car to see if this actually jives.

Thanks for all the replies!

Not sure if this will help but sometimes just leaving something unpowered for 30 or 45 minutes helps to reset any internal circuit breaker that can not be seen. Basically power down the layout or take the car off for a while and see what happens.
This happens to my Williams engines for the e-unit or circuit.

What you describe is an intermittent operation, It could be a cold solder joint or damaged PC board land, a loose connector or wire.. When it makes contact your car works.. These are what to check for if the problem comes back.. Good luck

The last time I had a problem like that it was gremlins. Definitely gremlins! Have you seen any gremlins around your layout lately? Trust me, they are there!
