MTH 840 Power Station

When I found out that MHT canceled the 840 Power Station for this year I purchased one over the internet. Although NIB I found that the light bulb, as well as the instruction sheet were missing from the box.
Does anyone have a copy of the instruction sheet which they can email to me? , or can anyone tell me the bulb I need for this building?.

Have you tried emailing MTH for the requested items? Not everybody is into MTH or accessories by MTH. If this accessory is anything like the Lionel accessories don't use more than 14 volts to operate.

Yes, I emailed MTH on Friday, and still have had no response. Their Website list instruction manuals, but when you bring up the power station all you get is a color picture and a description.

I have the MTH 840,I think it is the big powerhouse? Anyway it just takes an 18 volt screw type bulb,it should have a round socket on the top. I also purchased a Lionel sign for mine that goes between the 3 stacks from Lionel parts.

Dale, Is it a B10 based bulb??. Also, how do you hook up the various knife switches on the side??. Are transformers suppose to sit inside the Station??.

My 840 I think is an early issue. It came with both MTH and Lionel signs for the stacks.

You really got an early model,Lionel made them stop using the sign long ago. I purchased mine 15 years ago directly from MTH and did not get a sign. Some early models came with tool boxes. Mine did not come with insructions. The knife switches may be functional but I do not use mine as such. The bulb at least on mine is the same common base as the minature screw in bases used on the 115 station and #58 lamposts,marx light towers ect. MTH pretty much copied the Lionel originals. I dont know enough about postwar to answer your question about putting transformers inside. I would not do it because I keep my 110 volt feeds seperate from my low voltage feeds. There is also no holes in the base to pass wires through. If you decide to do this,proceed with caution.
The new Lionel repo of the powerhouse has widow inserts light diffusers. How you dress it up is up to you.

Lionel's prewar version of this accessory is one of my layout favorites. When the Power Station first came out in the 1930's, it was advertised that up to two transformers could be hidden inside (the orange roof sections on either side can slide out). While I don't have transformers inside my Power Station, I do use the knife switches on the side for accessory control. On the prewar version, there are openings on either end of the knife switch panel that allow for wiring to the switches. I think it's neat to use those old knife switches as they were originally intended to be used. Click on the photo for a larger view.

This is a great accessory if you have the room and the bucks. Some day I may put window inserts in my MTH model. Lionel also did a nice job on the double Hellgate bridge. I am more of a toy train guy than a scenery guy so I like this stuff.
