As far as safety is concerned, AWG 16 is the smallest that you should use, since the transformer can supply as much as 10 amperes. (Did I get that right this time?) Since 14 and 12 AWG is so easy to find and cheap, you could consider installing it in case you ever get a bigger transformer.

I used 14 gauge stranded wire for my track with size 8-10 ring terminals to connect to my KW. My wire length was 25' in some spots but you can still use it for 10'.

The Wire Gauges that are best for transformer to the track connections are 14, 16, 18.

Wire gauge and terminal size for Lionel KW

What gauge wire should I use for the track and accessory connections off my Lionel KW? No wires will be longer than 10 feet. If I use crimp-on spade or ring terminals on the end of the wires, what size (e.g., 6, 8, 10) will make a good connection on the transformer and accessory terminals?
