Problem with Lionel SD MAC 80
Posted by tschmidt on Friday, April 14, 2006 4:41 PM
I have the CP version of this engine and I have a couple of problems with it. I should say that it is the Lionmaster version. First, when I put power to the track, I get interior lights but no headlight. In reverse I get no light on the back of the engine. When I address this engine I do get full sound capabilities but when I apply speed to it I get limited power. I estimate it only speeds up to about 30% of what it would be capable of doing. All other trains on the track work fine. In fact, this engine works fine except for front and rear headlights and inability to gain speed. Anyone have an idea of what might be wrong?

Thanks, TomS

TomS - I'm not familiar with this particular engine, nor series, but when I've had strang problems with TMCC engines I've done a reprogram per the instruction book, and re-entered the correct engine code. Uaually clears the problem.

Tom,

I agree with Roger for reprogamming as a first step.

Also check that all the wheels are turning at the same speed (run it upside down in conventional mode or run it with the body sheel off) to make sure one of the motor trucks is not binding up. Check internal wiring for a loose wire and while the shell is off, turn each flywheel and see that you can easily turn it and that the wheels are also turning.

Roy

Also lube the heck out of the gears. I have two of the full size guys. I was warned by a "Lionel Expert" to keep them lubed. I put a lot of gear grease on the gears and use my needle oiler to put synthetic oil on the gear shafts and all the axles. Like they said, I've had to reset all of my engines once or twice. If yours is like my full size ones, you do not have the contacts in the rear the body for the lights. Some of my other Lionel engines have spring contacts in the shell that contact a plate on the body for the lights. These will get "off" and have to be repositioned.

Roger, Roy and Chief,

Thanks for the suggestions. I will get to them over the next few days.
