Thanks everyone. That's plenty of food for thought.

Would the Southern also run with the Atlantic Coast Line?

That would make sense to me.

Here's some information from "Wikipedia" on the Southern - including railways that it owned, yards, etc:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Railway_%28US%29

Here's a link to the Southern Historical Society:

The Southern's "Crescent Limited" (renamed the "Crescent" in the mid 1930s) was a passenger train that ran from New Orleans to New York City (I believe it was the Crescent which brought FDR's body back to Washington DC from Warm Springs, GA).

That covers a lot of territory in terms of real and fictitious track rights.

Kansas City Southern (KCS) could be a good choice for pretty much any period in the last century. KCS is unusual in that their trackage runs on the North-South axis, primarily between Chicago & New Orleans, so they intersect every other major US railroad (which all run primarily East-West).

In my neck of the woods, the Southern interchanged with the RF&P and also with the N&W. The Southern, like the Santa Fe (my favorite road); were both two of the best run and best led railroads in their time (I read thick histories of both roads).

Besides running rights (sharing track) you can consider interchanges (where railroads cross and sometimes exchange cars) or shared yards or passenger stations ("Union stations").

Part of the answer to your question depends on what part of the Southern system you model. Of course, part of the fun is using your imagination - you can invent an interchange with any railroad you like or make up an imaginary railroad (Lionel Lines comes to mind!)

Have fun!

In general railroads ran on their own track.

In the edges of the territories they served they sometimes have trackage rights over another railroad. Also occaisionally they have through train agreements for certain trains. When one railroad has bought another, but had not fully merged it you could see locomotives of both lines running all over both lines. Railroads also lease each other equipment or have other pooling arrangements.

If you are attempting to be prototypically accurate then you really do have to identify the time period and the part of the Southern system you are modeling.

If you just want to run primarily Southern locomotives, but include a few others you like then I would just do it. You can always say say you have a pooling arrangement or a through freight.

Enjoy

Where and when? Are you talking about the fringe areas of the railroad's coverage or its "heart". When is also an important question as lines would have come and gone before the big merger with the Nortfolk and Western.

Here at Evansville Indiana , the Southern branch [EB] off of the main line from Louisville KY to St Louis Mo . Has a yards at Eville , and used to , take the interchange cars to the C&EI Wansford Yards , where the Illinois Central also took their interchange cars too , and the Louisville & Nashville , L&N , also . Many times I had seen the Southern and IC and C&EI locos and L&N , all within sight of each other / or the next track over .
Whoops I almost forgot that one of the 2 , NYC branch 's into Eville , ended right into the Wansford Yard at Straightline Jct.
This has always created a interest in these RRds for me , and to also have at least one loco from each of the 5 RRds I saw a lot of years ago .
So far in O-27 / 3 rail , I have 2 C&EI locos and one NYC , and one Southern , so now I need an IC , and a L&N , and then I can return and relive those thrilling days of yesteryears ....................or a mask , or something like that was on the radio .......
And these 5 I listed did not even include all the electric / interurban RRds that also were in the mix , but they were gone by my time .
