transound or whistle
Posted by gwg50 on Tuesday, March 28, 2006 3:49 PM
Hi Guys
I bought this Lionel Santa Fe Berkshire Jr. Loco & tender with trainSounds #6-28671. The chuffing sound works but it will not whistle. I bought the sound activation button to work the whistle even though my zw has the whistle switch on it but the whistle still did not work. I turned the tender over and there was a switch that turns the trainsounds off and the whistle will work now. Is that how it works? Either the trainsounds or the whistle? Or is there something wrong?

Are you sure you're getting the dc pulse to the track? Do you have another whistle tender that you could set on the track to see if it will blow when you operate your activation button? Problems like that need to be ruled out before you blame the loco & tender.

Assuming you get dc power to the track, don't be surprized if get bell sound from the ZW whistle button, and with a bell activator you will get a whistle sound. The way it works is dc polarity one way, activates the bell and dc polarity the other way gives you the whistle.

Unfortunately on my ZW, they are backwards compared to what the trainsound tender is expecting. However, if I use modern transformers, the sounds are correct for the modern buttons. SInce it's trainsounds and not railsounds, it can only play one sound at a time, so if you have the whistle going, you won't here the engine sounds...same for the bell. The engine sounds are sync'ed to the wheel axiles on the trainsound car.

Hey Guys
I have read all post about bell and whistle on this forum. Yes I have another whistle tender and it has always worked just fine and still does from my zw button. But when I read one post about bell and whistle problem with a zw. It said to get a sound activation button and one guy said to get two, one for the whistle and one for the bell so I did bought 2 and hooked them just like it said and nothing, no bell no whistle. That’s when I turned the tender over and found the switch that turned off the trainsound. Then put it back on the track and the whistle
worked with my zw button then I hooked up one of the sound activation button to see if the bell would work nothing. In the manual it said nothing about a bell I’m thinking that it does not have a bell? What I was trying to find out is if you can only have one, either whistle or trainsound. I tried several times but could never get the whistle to work when the trainsound was turned on. Gary

My trainsound car whistle works wether or not the engine sound is on. When trainsound is on then the engine sound cuts off while the bell is ringing or the whistle is blowing. If you could find a friend with a trainsound car you could see how it works on your layout. Or if you could take your loco / engine to a hobby shop or someone elses layout you could see if it is the activiator or the unit.

Hi all,
We have the same loco with Trainsounds.
In correct operation the switch on the bottom of the tender turns the chuffing
and crewtalk off. Leaving the bell and whistle active.
Hope this helps

I sent my original post to Lionel and this is there response.

{In the "ON" position, you should get all the sounds, including steamsound, whistle, bell, and crewtalk. In the "OFF" position, you should only hear whistle and bell. If your tender does not work this way, it needs to be serviced.
Thanks

Thanks all for trying to help

Gary,
Please let us know how the service is. I have had a good experience with Lionel in regards to a faulty CW80, but others have had some issues.
