Forum categories deletions

Just noticed on my Garden RR forum (Kalmbach), they are deleting some of the forum categories.

I believe that CTT's forum is the only one with just one category, namely "Toy train operating and collecting"

Don't really see too much about collecting here, though.

It's goofy Dave. Rene has managed to get a zillion different forums started for that small group, but MR and CTT have gotten none during my tenure. Bass ackwards if you ask me. A clear case of "the ridiculous vs the sublime".

Large Scale is far more diverse than O gauge, and usually needs specific topics that deal with more specialized interests (and even various scales within the broad "Large Scale" category). Yes, an O gauge forum could also be sub-divided into a whole lot of special interest topics, as well (and some are), but I'm not sure that is really needed on a forum that is intended for a general toy train audience.

Yeah, I really don't think we need a bunch of different subcatagories over here. We only get what... 1-1/2 pages of new posts per day, on average? It's really not too hard to keep up with it all, the way it is. Now if we had 3 or 4 pages of new posts per day, that would be a different story.

I think one category per magazine should be enough. The more categories, the harder it is to decide where a post should go. Never saw the need for all the subdivisions of garden railways.
Even Model Railroader and Trains have a couple of categories and get off postings. Some people, especially new ones, don't even get the differences between the magazines. I've never quite understood why there is one called "Classic Trains".

"Classic Trains" is for folks who enjoy reading about railroading when railroading was king. It's an offshoot of the former "Vintage Rails" magazine, which I still regard as the greatest prototype rail history magazine ever published (I must admit that I did the model railroading columns for that magazine, as well).

Personally, I enjoy reading "Classic Trains" more than I do "Trains" or similar publications that deal primarily with present-day rail operations. But I admit that I have always liked the title "Vintage Rails" better than the title "Classic Trains."
