Originally posted by David Christian I have a 4 year old that I took to a train show a few weeks ago and man did he ever take to them. He has about 13 Thomas the Tank Engine wooden trains but I had to pick him up and carry him away, as he did not want to leave. I have never seen him get into something so much. I had an O guage set when I was a boy and I am thinking about getting him (us) as train set. I had a Lionel. Questions: I see this company MTH and they seem to hame more advanced features, are they better then Lionel or is it a personal choice? My choice would be Lionel since they make what your kids already like! The point about the action cars is a good one too! My Lionel set is having its wheels run off by our 3 yr old girl. I also bought some K line gondolas because kids like to put things in trains, carriages look nice but they don't do anything useful. Lionels operating accessories are a lot of fun too. This is purely a personal observation but my local hobby shop pushes MTH so aggressively, example I went to buy some FastTrack and he tried to get me to switch to MTH's, that its put me off them! Silly I suppose but it annoys me. Makes me wonder whats in it for him. If the shop you get it from sells both track systems see if they will swap the MTH track for FasTrack, sell it or keep it for a Christmas loop under the tree. The MTH engine has full PS2 electronics, good sound, speed control and smokes much much better that a Lionel starter engine. To get those comparable features in a Lionel will cost you much more $. When you get the train for your son - let him treat it like what it is - a toy. (If that means getting least expensive one so you don't mind if it breaks - then so be it.) You obviously need to teach him to take care of his things - but I over did it with my son and scared him away from the hobby. Twelve years later I still truly enjoy the hobby - but sure would enjoy it more if my son was involved. For motive power, we have Lionels, An RMT Beep, and a Williams 671. So far, no MTH, and I'll tell you why. I'm more than a little leary of the whole battery dying/need for reprogramming thing. Do the starter sets have batteries that need charging? What is the battery for? I don't know. All PS2 (Protosound 2) engines and all PS1 engines have a battery. If the battery discharges on a PS2 you just set it on the track with the transformer on for about 30 minutes and it will recharge and operate. If a PS1 battery is dead you can scramble the chip and that is a problem. Jim H Reply Anonymous Member sinceApril 2003 305,205 posts Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, March 23, 2006 2:25 PM . QUOTE: joe0315 Posted: 22 Mar 2006, 06:25:09 I think this is a "no brainer". If your son loves the Polar Express, buy it. Then, you can choose the freight cars, one at a time, that YOU like. I'll have to agree. If your son has shown a preference for the Polar Express, remove the passenger cars, and simply add any additional freight or operating cars of your own choosing, from any O gauge model train manufacturer. Both Lionel ( http://www.lionel.com/Products/Catalogs/ ) and MTH-Railking ( http://www.mth-railking.com/catalog/index.asp have plenty of choices to choose from- even that Missile Firing Car ( http://www.lionel.com/Products/Catalogs/Catalog.cfm?CatalogID=7&PageID=800 ) you mentioned. That way, you'll have both a passenger and a freight train. The purpose of model railroading is to (a) have FUN (b) enjoy a hobby (c) learn new skills (electrical, planning, woodworking, painting, etc. etc.), and many other benefits that can come with it i.e. creating friendships with other enthusiasts in train clubs or the forums. Good luck. . Reply Edit Join our Community! Our community is FREE to join. To participate you must either login or register for an account.
