Speaker ideas?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 8, 2006 8:32 PM
Awhile back, I bought a JLC Series Rio Grande Challenger. About two days after I started running it, the sound quit working. I finally got it to a shop and, after a few weeks of waiting, was told that the speaker had blown out. Naturally, it's a special speaker, and nobody knows when it will ever get there. Is there anyone else I can get one of these special speakers from to avoid waiting ump-teen months to run my Challenger again? I'd appreciate any leads!

Have you tried contacting who-ever sold the Rio Grande Challenger about warrenty repair? Other than that have you tried either Radio Shack for a speaker or a stereo speaker company like Bose or Pioneer, they make tweeters in very small sizes and may have one that will work for your application.

I wonder what make it a "special" speaker.

The higher end lionel loco's have been testbeds for new sound technologies. This included new speaker types like what would become known as "fat boys". The speakers aren't made by Lionel so you should be able to get replacements. The main issues are physical size and electrical loading (i.e. what is the impedance rating for the unit, 4 ohm/8 ohm/?).

Yes, I think the speaker is one of those 2" Fat Boy speakers made by Digital Dynamics. I just need to find out if the speaker is 8 ohm or 16 ohm. I'll check to see if the shop has been able to order one yet.

Thanks,
