Ideas on scratch built Ice station?

Mickey, That is a fine piece of work. I like the white, prototypes probably were this color when at the peak of operation. Most of these structures were neglected in later years but I like to see them modeled as they were when built.

Great job. I wish I was handy enough to scratch build structures like yours. I have trouble enough putting together a Plasticville building so it stays together.[:(]

For the dedicated scratch bilder I remember seeing one in a book called "Animations" or with Animation in the title and it had a whole series of elaborate projects including an icing platform. Perhaps someone knows the exact title. Anyway it's worth looking up.

One of the "Great Layout" episodes have a ice station that they guy custom made. It was real neat and even had the area under the platform "wet" to look like some melted ice. I wish I could tell you the particular show as it was a great set up. He also had a lot of details, such as signs for caution, hard hat area, etc. yours looks great though.

In reply to FJ and G about my ice house and platform on Sunday photo fun, I thought I would ask others to furnish info and photos of their ice facilities. I like ice stations because they provide a great opportunity to add action sites to layouts. Mine is not an operating ice facility, although on another part of my layout, I do have the Lionel ice station that has been the subject of other threads.
So, Dave, attached are photos of various views of the ice platform. The ice house is made of 1 x 6 pine, cut and sized to make a building roughly the size and dimensions of the Lionel grain elevator, that I have on my layout. The platform is based on a Walthers HO ice platform that I had when I was in HO.

Dimensions: 36 inches long; 7.5 inches tall in the back; 6.5 inches tall in the front; and 2 inches wide. I used basswood for the uprights, Popsicle sticks for the cross members, balsa wood for the floor and roof. At one time I had the wood stained a natural wood color, but it did not show as well as I wanted where I positioned it. I like white on some structures because it shows well. I enjoyed making it.
